Yellow Wolf's War Whistle

ca.1870s

This whistle was fashioned from the wing bone of an eagle or crane and was only to be used in battle. Yellow Wolf wore its buckskin loop around his neck and left shoulder while the whistle rested under his arm. The two down feathers tied to it were selected from the chest of an eagle. Both the fluttering of these feathers in the wind and the shrill sound of the whistle when blown were considered conducive to success in battle. Carried through the Nez Perce War and presented to L. V. McWhorter by Yellow Wolf in 1909.

Length: 24.3cm. Feathers, Bone, and Buckskin.
